How We Met

Ashley and I will both admit that when we first met each other, neither of us would have ever thought that the other person was the one that we were going to marry. We had classes together at Westside and we were friends, but there wasn’t anything more than that going on. In fact, it wasn’t until we had known each other for three years that we first noticed each other! It started because a mutual friend (who was playing match-maker) told us that the other person was interested. This was near the end of our junior year of high school, and once our friend mentioned it to me, I started noticing that Ashley was a pretty girl. At this point, I had no intentions of starting any relationships because I was planning on going to college in another state and it didn’t make a lot of sense to me to start a relationship that was going to end up being a long-distance relationship. I think that I even told Ashley that I thought the whole concept of “boyfriend-girlfriend” was a stupid idea in high school because nothing would ever come of it… Well, logic and reason don’t always speak louder than emotions! There was a pool party at another one of our friend’s houses, and that was when I noticed that Ashley was really attractive to me and I knew that I liked her personality because her and I had been friends (not best friends or anything, but friends nonetheless). That party was kind of when things got started for us. When we were in this “I think you’re attractive and a cool person, but I don’t really know what we’re supposed to do now” stage, we would often go do dinner in big groups with our friends or watch movies with all of our friends. One night when we were at a friend’s house, we were watching a movie and Ashley was sitting on a different couch next to other people. This was one of those situations were you’re thinking, “Should I go and sit next to her? Would that be weird? What if she doesn’t want me to? And once I sit down, then what am I supposed to do?” So, the movie ends, and… I never went and sat by her. Well, good thing our friends were really into movies; we ended up watching a second movie. Before we started this second movie, I did it; I went and sat by her. I think that this was probably the best decision that I have ever made. As simple as sitting down on a couch would normally be, these types of things are nearly impossible to determine when you are 17 years old! Well, I must have found some audacity between the couch cushions, because by the time the movie was over, I had managed to put my arm around her. And, that was how it started. That was June 14th, 2003.
